COVID-19 has led to an abrupt halt in nature-based tourism around the world, marked by travel restrictions, lockdowns and closures of protected areas. Unfortunately, when tourism stops, so too do the benefits of conservation, both for wildlife and local communities alike.
Booking.com, the world’s largest online travel booking business, has released its 2020 Sustainability Report, sharing market intelligence that 80% of travelers think sustainable travel is important, and 70% are more likely to choose an accommodation if it has implemented sustainable practices.
